Looking at intended meaning, representation and presentation of concepts, alternative formats or approaches, April will work hands-on to critique, guide and reconceptualize/recontextualize that which you have a passion for either at Made in Space, her downtown Los Angeles studio, or in the wonderful desert environment, at her mid-century modern motel/spa in Desert Hot Springs, Miracle Manor Retreat.

A special and unique worksession, customized to your needs and desires-
We might work on an existing project to update/upgrade/try a new twist or approach, or try something new that is burning in your skull- or review your portfolio and body of work.

Each student may propose a project for the one day session.

A letter of intent and a pdf file of your work, and proposed project concepts is required before commencing.

Ed Fella Lecture at Pasadena City College

AIGA medal recipient Ed Fella will present a lecture about his work, “I’m History: The Exit-Level Designer,” at Pasadena City College on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 PM, at PCC’s Vosloh Forum. Fella is speaking in conjunction with his exhibition, “I’m History,” in the Pasadena City College art gallery through November 20. The gallery will remain open after the lecture so that the audience can see the show and meet Fella informally.

Saturday, November 6, 2010, non-profit Youth Opportunities United (“YOU”) and Fox Studios will partner once again to provide a day of art and education for teen-aged foster youth from Los Angeles County. The 18th Animagination Festival will have up to ten separate hands-on art seminars including Stop Motion Animation, Toy Design, Advertising Art Design, Comic Book Design and Cartoon Character Design, Computer Graphics (MAC computers) and Fashion Design. Volunteers with an artistic interest ‚Äìwhether students, teachers, or professionals ‚Äì are needed. Foster kids often move between foster and parent homes and don’t have a continuing adult influence to provide skills for success. Volunteers will help the students with their hands-on projects, while helping them also learn about persistence, practice, reward, and positive criticism.

Held on the Fox lot, the Animagination Festival brings about 75 artistic foster teens together with animation and graphic arts professionals for a day of seminars, interaction and exposure to professionals who can point them in the right direction. A gallery of the students’ art will feature this year’s theme: “Character from my closet” and volunteers will help select winners to receive art awards.

Seminars will be presented in two continuing sessions (morning and afternoon) to permit them both learning and application. Each seminar has its own curriculum goals and take-home project. Volunteers will encourage, instruct, and interact, sharing real-world experiences that helped form their careers.

YOU needs volunteer graphic arts professionals to help teach the seminars. Curriculum for most is already organized but additional teachers are needed to provide more one-on-one contact. No pay involved, other than the reward of giving time and talent to see the light go off in their heads!

YOU has no paid staff but liaises directly with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services to provide opportunities for abused and neglected foster youth that are not met by government funding. Special emphasis is on improving kids’ self-esteem and developing their skills to provide hope and career interest. To see more about YOU and Animagination check out: http://www.youla.org. Production duties would include setup and filming of the event, and post-production includes addition of title and logo cards, and output of entire event, as well as a few smaller clips.
