See Sustainable Design Differently at SEEing Green 2: Moving Beyond Green

Los Angeles, California - March 23, 2009 - AIGA/LA presents its second annual SEEing Green Conference on sustainable design at the Skirball Cultural Center on Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. SEEing Green 2: Moving Beyond Green will explore how brands can move beyond green by widening the way we think about design.

“The design question of how one can do the right thing and do well is a tremendous source of inspiration and exploration.” - Duke Stump

Three keynote speakers will talk about the latest ideas in sustainable design and moving beyond deliverables to green design as a brand strategy. They will explore new ways of approaching sustainability for designers and their clients including business strategy, best practices for responsible design and production (without compromising aesthetic and cost), and methods to create informed and relevant brand positioning.

“I am confident that through collaboration and adoption of responsible practices we can find design, strategy and marketing solutions that will allow us to continue to prosper while not compromising the ability of future generations to survive and thrive.” - Aaris Sherin

Aaris Sherin, author of SustainAble: A handbook of materials and applications for graphic designers and their clients (Rockport Publishers), will discuss “Sustainable Problem Solving.” Aaris will talk about changing practices in agencies, including talking to clients, writing briefs and developing best business practices to incorporate sustainability into your firm. Aaris believes: “It is vital that designers and marketers are able to show that their work adds value to brands and positively impacts a company’s bottom line. Adopting more environmental and socially responsible practices is an opportunity for companies to differentiate themselves.”

Duke Stump, Principal & Chief Architect of The Northstar Manifesto, former CMO of Seventh Generation and VP of Nike will present on the cultural changes affecting how we approach branding in “Shift Happens.” Duke is a brand guru who will talk about how to create an authentic and intuitive sustainable brand strategy. Duke describes this opportunity for firms to learn to design sustainably: “It truly is a white canvas in which to design and create a new possibility. Unleash the creativity that rests within your brand.”

Kevin O’Donnell, Al Gore’s prolific Climate Project speaker and director of WD Ecologic, will present “Green Design - Thinking Beyond Deliverables.” Kevin will discuss how to make sustainability relevant to our design community with practical ideas for any size firm. Kevin will address the economics of going green as well: “Many green issues include efficiency…. Getting people over the preconception that green is automatically more expensive is a more difficult hurdle now, but economic challenges require innovative thinking…. At its core sustainable design is all about innovation.”

In addition to the speakers, one and a half hours of content from Compostmodern will be recast. Compostmodern is the annual conference presented by AIGA SF and AIGA’s Center for Sustainable Design. The recast will feature inventor and eco-preneur Saul Griffith, Core77 editor-in-chief and industrial design educator Allan Chochinov and Emily Pilloton, Project H Design Founder.

Anyone interested in sustainability and design is welcome to attend.

AIGA members attend for $45; student members attend for $25. Non-members attend for $60; student non-members attend for $35. Tickets will be $15 extra at the door, pending availability.
AIGA/LA Welcomes New Incoming President Michael Lejeune

President’s goals are to overcome barriers in the design community and celebrate LA’s design diversity.

Los Angeles, California - June 16, 2008 - AIGA/LA, the professional association for design, is proud to welcome its new incoming president Michael Lejeune, whose term began May 2008 and will end in May 2010.

Currently, Michael is creative director for Metro, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. A lifelong Angeleno, Michael started his career in advertising and entertainment management before opening his own writing and design office.

He learned the ins and outs of managing a creative enterprise while building City of Hope’s design department. He furthered his education in great design and design management when he joined AIGA|LA Fellow Kim Baer at KBDA.

He is married and has two children.

As an active member of the design community, Michael was eager to become more involved in overcoming barriers in order to unite LA’s large and diverse community. “I’ve seen how design can engage an unwilling audience and change both perception and behavior. I think there’s a real opportunity for AIGA to act as a bridge between the many, many diffused practitioners of design here. As with Metro’s customers, I think LA’s design community is challenged by geography, and our role is to overcome that distance.”

During his term, Michael and a highly energized board hope to increase new membership and retain current members, create real value for designers in every stage of their career, and develop programming and education opportunities that are relevant to the practice of design today. Celebrating design diversity and excellence in LA are also top priorities.

PARTY AMONG THE STARS AT AIGA/LA’S DESIGN EVENT OF THE YEAR

Los Angeles, California - April 16, 2008 - AIGA/LA, the professional association for design, is hosting the most celebrated design event of the year, L.A. Defines Design / Design Defines L.A., on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 7:30pm to 11:30pm at the Elevate Lounge in downtown Los Angeles.

The celebration will feature a DJ and dancing in Elevate’s sleek, ambient atmosphere with amazing views of downtown LA. Guests will be treated to savory Japanese fusion food from Takami Sushi and themed cocktails at the bar. There will be an installation of work by the Fellows, courtesy of Brand New School.

Also on view will be LA designer kicks from the Sole Search Design Contest. For Sole Search, AIGA/LA invited designers and artists (and shoe lovers, too) to share their sole vision and customize a TOMS shoe with a unique design. The winning design will inspire one of the next TOMS Shoes Limited Edition. Entries support the TOMS mission and benefit the AIGA/LA Scholarship Fund. TOMS donates a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes purchased.

“Through culture, entertainment, products and experiences, Los Angeles designers have influenced how people see and dream all over the world,” noted Agustin Garza, President of AIGA/LA. “And it is Los Angeles’ history, cultural richness and complex, interwoven landscapes that have shaped the visions of the designers who live and work here.”

The event will honor the recipients of the AIGA Fellow Award, given to designers who have made a significant contribution to the L.A. design community. “Literally great design is all around us, all the time: Randy’s Donuts, LA Dodgers, the Chemosphere House, Charles and Ray Eames, the Pan Pacific Auditorium, Disney Hall,” stated Michael Hodgson.

Hodgson, along with Archie Boston and Petrula Vrontikis will be presented with the 2007 Fellow Award in a special ceremony. The event will also commend AIGA Los Angeles Fellows Sean Adams, Noreen Morioka, Doyald Young, Kim Baer, Buddy Berke, Keith Bright, John Clark, Nan Faessler, April Greiman, David Goodman, Toni Hollander-Morse, Harold I. Huttas, InJu Sturgeon and Deborah Sussman.

The Fellow Award is a national AIGA initiative founded in 1999. The program is a means of recognizing mature professionals who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within their local or regional community as well as in their local AIGA chapter.

AIGA members attend for free. Non-member pre-registered ticket prices are $35 ($25 for students). Tickets include food and drinks. There will be a $15 additional fee for tickets purchased at the door. Guests who want to become a member may join at the event and attend for free.
