What is a a Micro-Event?
A micro-event is a small gathering of local design-interested people organized around a single idea or topic. The gathering can be inspiring, educational, experiential, productive, exploratory, or really anything you think is useful, valuable, or awesome. Micro-Events are essentially "un-produced" and require little more than an idea, a date and a location.
What is the purpose of Micro-Programming?
We hope to foster community in intimate ways across the entire LA metro area. AIGA/LA is embarked on a renewed effort to connect, inspire, stimulate and support all design professionals throughout the arc of their careers regardless of geography or sub-discipline. AIGA's national mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force.
What do you mean, when you say a "small" event?
Depending on subject matter, format and venue, attendance may be anywhere between 10 and 20 people.
How long does a Micro-Event last?
It's up to you, but generally 1-1.5 hours is best.
What do I need to do, to put together a Micro-Event?
That depends on the event. Some events need only an idea and a meeting point (like a gallery tour), others may require arranging a venue or speaker (like a workshop or roundtable). Tailor it to the level of interaction that works for you.
What will the Chapter provide?
We'll setup an Eventbrite registration, to manage and track attendance. This way, you won't end up with 100 people at your event, when you only have ten chairs. It also helps to gauge the popularity of events, to help guide in future planning.
We will list the event on www.aigalosangeles.org. We'll setup an event page, that includes the ability for you to automatically share it (through Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, and others).
Some events will also be promoted by the Chapter through SYNC - the AIGA/LA newsletter, and through social media blasts and posts.
How much planning is involved?
The idea behind Micro-Programming is that the planning phase is minimal, and should take no more than 2 weeks to do. Think of it as a small gathering of people over wine or coffee, a salon, or a small meetup. In most cases, once you have a theme and a location to meet, run it by the the Programming Committee, we approve it, and you’re ready to go.
Are Micro-Events free to attend?
We believe that whenever possible, micro-events should be free. In some cases we will require a $1-5 registration fee through Eventbrite. Experience has shown that with "free events", people who register do not always attend. With a nominal fee, registration more closely tracks with actual attendance.
Do I have to be an AIGA member to organize a Micro-Event?
No, but membership is awesome, and some larger events you may want to attend will be for members only. Take a test drive before you join, and you'll probably want to once you get involved.
Do attendees have to be members?
No. We do request that you set aside half of the "seats" for members. In certain circumstances, we can also set aside seats for other types of members (students, faculty, associate members, etc..)
Do attendees have to pre-register?
Yes. We require that all attendees pre-register for the event using our online event registration tool, Eventbrite. Registration will close 24hrs in advance of the event. This will help you and the Chapter to know exactly who's coming.
Is there funding available for Micro-Events?
We've found that when approached with the right spirit, local businesses are more than happy to donate refreshments, space or site amenities in exchange for recognition at the event, and online. We can be of some assistance identifying local partners, however you are probably in the best place to know your own neighborhood.
In some cases the Chapter may provide micro-funding to support an event. Funds requested will be subject to review by the Programming Committee.
Where should I hold my Micro-Event?
Our goal is to hold events all across the Southland. If you live in San Gabriel, don't think you have to hold your event in Pasadena. We want to cover as many cities as possible and engage people on a local level.
What kind of locations work best?
A local café, your office, a client's boardroom, a bar or pub, a branch library, an art gallery - basically anywhere. Events can also be mobile - plan a field trip to an exhibition, group up for net-walking, a hike or themed bike ride.
I'm already doing somthing similar to this, can I call it an AIGA Micro-Event?
Yes. We love partnering. We're happy to co-brand with you, to support your existing efforts.
What about a series or set of events, or regularly-scheduled events?
We'd love to have a regularly scheduled series of micro-events. Let us know what you're thinking.
What about a larger event?
We are always interested in larger events or series that you'd like to create. Reach out to us, and we'll help you bring your ideas into reality.
Are there other opportunities available in programming?
We currently have opportunities for a Micro-Programming Coordinator, Chapter Event Producers, and Assistant Producers.
How do I propose an event?
Contact the Programming Committee through this form (http://aigalosangeles.org/contact). Write up your event idea and we'll review it and be in touch.
What is the "approval" process for events?
The Programming Committee will review your event and make sure it's appropriate, then give you the greenlight to make it happen.
