Design Invention

AIGA/LA friends and fans from across the nation were asked "What design tool would you want to have invented? What invention would help you design better, work more efficiently or creatively?"

I guess the design tool I would want most would be an "automatic good type tool." If there was a tool or plug-in that evens out rags, handles widows, kerns, and does automatic leading all based on some kinda mathmatical formula that would be awesome. We're trying to write a javascript at work that would handle kerning for us in InDesign. It would be such a time saver and would let us do way more fun design.

To work more efficiently, I would like a touch screen monitor where I can use my hands to design. Keyboard shortcuts would be replaced with voice commands. Keyboards and mice will soon be a thing of the past.

Like digital TV, we need a cut-off date for fonts. After a certain date it's OPEN font support only in all PRO apps.

A tool that essentially allowed you to create XML-controlled designs, which could be dynamically augmented post-creation. I think about how often Photoshop opens needlessly for minor changes that could otherwise be averted.

A color matching WYSIWYG system that is consistent from web to print to Pantone.

I think every design program should have a time tracker built in so it'd be easier to log all hours worked. Every time you open an existing or new document, the clock starts and naturally, every time you close it out, it stops.

If Illustrator & Photoshop merged completely. It can be called Phillistrator.

A really efficient, really high quality native 3D object/text extrusion with volumetric lighting in Photoshop. I want native 3D in all my apps. Seamless.
