Event Description
Our panel on In-House Design aims to shed light on how designers within organizations should shape the perception of the design function as strategic advisor to the company leadership, its brands and its innovation ambitions.
California’s Designing Women, 1896–1986

Event Description
The newness of California, and the state’s periodic bursts of population growth, afforded unprecedented opportunities for women to participate in the creation and production of design, one of the principal engines of California’s dynamic economy, now the sixth largest in the world. As California’s extraordinary role in American design is receiving the recognition it has long deserved, California’s Designing Women, 1896–1986 acknowledges the work of more than fifty of the women who, as designers and entrepreneurs, helped make that distinction possible.

Women have long been recognized as practitioners of the decorative arts, but commercial design and fine craft, which are the focus of California’s Designing Women, 1896–1986, were long considered the province of men. This unprecedented exhibition honors female designers who made major contributions to Californian and American design by incorporating into their work the newest styles, materials, and technologies of their time—often influenced by California’s unique confluence of cultures, among them Indigenous American, Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican. Many of its approximately 240 examples of textiles, ceramics, furniture, lighting, tapestries, jewelry, clothing, and graphics are being exhibited for the first time.

These functional and decorative objects, which span almost a century of design movements—from Arts and Crafts to Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern and beyond—exemplify California’s national and international reputation for unrestrained creativity. The exhibition opens with hand-cut, wood-block printed posters and closes with one of the first computer-aided graphics. In between these technological poles are works created from a gamut of materials, including wood, abalone, glass, cotton, steel, silver, acetate, acrylic, and fiberglass, materials of American daily life forged in California’s vast, welcoming workshop.

WITHOUT CONTRAST, YOU ARE DEAD.

When Paul Rand first coined this phrase, he was speaking specifically of the golden rule of visual communication: without difference, nothing is distinguishable. And if you cannot be distinguishable, you are nothing. You are printing black on black.

But Rand’s quote reaches further than graphic design. The world is made of opposites: night and day; land and water; hot and cold; man and woman; Jack and Coke.

When contrast occurs, opposites attract. The resulting combinations create a harmony that needs no explanation. These paradoxes are what make life exciting and memorable.

Rand’s quote is more relevant today than ever before. Graphic designers communicate to a cynical society that has seen it all, willing to dismiss most of their daily visual consumption.

For the eighteen graduating students of the BFA Graphic Design program at Cal State University, Long Beach, contrast is the key to visual communication. It is the contrasting elements that make what we do memorable. The perfect attraction of two opposites will create an entirely new page in the history of pop culture.

And for the eighteen of us as a collective, opposites really do attract. From our nationalities, to our personalities, to our design styles—we’re a mixed bag of opposites that somehow work wonderfully together.

Please join us in celebrating the culminating exhibition of our work—both individual and collective—from over the past two years. We would love to show you what we’ve been working on together.

Saturday, November 19, 2011, non-profit Youth Opportunities United (“YOU”) and Fox Studios will partner once again to provide a day of art and education for teen-aged foster youth from Los Angeles County. The 18th Animagination Festival will have up to ten separate hands-on art seminars including Stop Motion Animation, Advertising Art Design, Comic Book Design and Cartoon Character Design, Computer Graphics (MAC computers) and Fashion Design. Volunteers with an artistic interest -whether students, teachers, or professionals - are needed. Foster kids often move between foster and parent homes and don’t have a continuing adult influence to provide skills for success. Volunteers will help the students with their hands-on projects, while helping them also learn about persistence, practice, reward, and positive criticism.

Held on the Fox lot, the Animagination Festival brings about 75 artistic foster teens together with animation and graphic arts professionals for a day of seminars, interaction and exposure to professionals who can point them in the right direction. A gallery of the students’ art will featured and volunteers will help select winners to receive art awards.

Seminars will be presented in two continuing sessions (morning and afternoon) to permit them both learning and application. Each seminar has its own curriculum goals and take-home project. Volunteers will encourage, instruct, and interact, sharing real-world experiences that helped form their careers.

Admittance Information
Free.

Additional Event Information
YOU needs volunteer graphic arts professionals to help teach the seminars. Curriculum for most is already organized but additional teachers are needed to provide more one-on-one contact. No pay involved, other than the reward of giving time and talent to see the light go off in their heads!

YOU has no paid staff but liaises directly with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services to provide opportunities for abused and neglected foster youth that are not met by government funding. Special emphasis is on improving kids’ self-esteem and developing their skills to provide hope and career interest. To see more about YOU and Animagination check out, click here. If you would like to volunteer at Animagination this year, please contact ledfam6384@sbcglobal.net or Sandy Bradley. Deadline for volunteers is November 12 .

Most days, Perry can be found working away in his Brooklyn-based studio, ceaselessly mixing colors, pulling prints, building sculptures and exercising his belief in the transformative power of making things.

Event Description
Each quarter, GAUGE, the AIGA student group at Cal State LA, hosts a guest designer. This is our premier event each quarter, and the purpose is to inspire and educate our design students. The talks run for a length of 30-45 minutes with a question and answer period to follow.

For the Fall 2011 quarter, GAUGE is honored to present Jose Caballer.

Jose has a passion for education, and has recently begun his own education company, known appropriately as Groop Skool. He teaches teamwork and has a process for collaboration between business, creative and technical people that is unmatched. He is known for his positive approach to education.

In addition to examples of some inspiring design work, what you’ll get from Jose is a unique perspective on the business side of design. A creative business presents many different challenges from other businesses. Jose knows them well, and is very willing to share his experiences.

Jose is CEO & Chief Digital Educator of The Groop, a Digital Agency. Growing up in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, Jose developed his visual acumen at an early age (he handcrafted a race track and cars out of river clay and cardboard shoe boxes). He quickly developed an appetite for entrepreneurism as well, selling Star-Wars replica space ships made out of chipboard, foam and paper to his 6th and 7th grade classmates (Darth Vader’s Imperial Transport was his top seller). He figures that’s why he gravitated to a career in digital media because of the blinking lights, sounds and visuals that it combines.

Throughout his career he’s had the opportunity to collaborate with clients such as Sega, Microsoft, Wieden + Kennedy, WK Tokyo Lab, Sony Music, Warner Music, Art Center College of Design, Nike and Live Earth. While Jose is much more driven by results than awards, he’s taken home his share of hardware too, including Art Directors Club Young Guns 2004; HOW Magazine’s, Interactive Best of Show 2003; American Center for Design Web 100. In 2009 The Groop was #204 in the INC 500 and one of the Top Latino run companies.

When he’s not producing results for clients or helping run an alternative contemporary art space called LMProjects that he co-owns, he spends his time dropping knowledge on his weekly LIVE web show and iTunes podcast “This Week in Web Design” which reaches over thousands of viewers every month.

In addition to examples of some inspiring design work, what you’ll get from Jose is a unique perspective on the business side of design. A creative business presents many different challenges from other businesses. Jose knows them well, and is very willing to share his experiences.

The following bio is taken from AIGA LA, of which Jose is a board member:
