Twenty Years of Explosive Graphics from the archives of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics is featured in Actions, Conversations, and Intersections: A participatory based practice exhibition with 56+ artists, collectives, and organizations curated by Edith Abeyta and Michael Lewis Miller.

The 20th Anniversary of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics is cause for celebration. We have created a unique and independent institution that is nationally and internationally recognized as a source of artistic inspiration and a graphic resource for education and activism. We honor and remember a myriad of popular movements for social justice. By preserving the posters created to further these causes, we also pay tribute to the stories of the people who produced these works of art in their efforts to create a better world. The existence of these posters prevents many struggles from falling into obscurity. We give recognition to the many artists, often anonymous, who placed their talents in the service of others.

The posters in this display represent the graphics that CSPG has produced or reproduced to honor and commemorate individual artists and critical world events over the past 20 years. All pieces were selected for their graphic power and contemporary relevance. They depict ecological disaster, denounce attacks on civil liberties, promote free speech, and protest ongoing illegal wars. Every issue addressed in these works remains timely and critical today.

Opening Reception
Sunday, January 31, 2010 2:00 - 5:00 pm

Event Description
Art Against Empire uses the power of posters to document 60 years of opposition to U.S. interventions into the domestic affairs of sovereign nations. Political, economic and military interventions, many of them covert, have repeatedly resulted in unacceptable deaths and misery for millions. These posters show hopes and dreams, and the pain of dreams destroyed.

Art Against Empire will showcase over 100 political posters in the LACE galleries, spanning two dozen sovereign nations including Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Guatemala, Haiti, Cuba, Iran, and South Africa. It attempts to inform, challenge and inspire by confronting the viewer with images of past struggles that remain powerfully relevant today. It both raises questions about past interventions and fosters debate about present ones. The exhibition will also provide insight into why the amount of devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti can be linked to its long history of French colonialism and U.S. imperialism.

The United States is the focus of this exhibition. As citizens, we are ultimately responsible for the actions that are taken by our government in our name. Censorship and repression, so prevalent in wartime, invariably attempt to eliminate dissent, thereby violating the principles on which this democracy was founded. These posters document the efforts of people who refuse to remain silent and who use the power of art to inspire action.

Escapes spans four decades of Polish art created under communist rule. As the country was being redefined socially and politically, artists were seeking new visions. At times their creativity was greatly restricted by the state while at other times, they found ways to express their opposition. Drawn primarily from the Bohdan “Bo” W. Oppenheim and Sylwestrowicz Collection as well as the holdings of the Center of the Study of Political Graphics and the Warszawa Restaurant, the exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and posters.

For its 12th event in Los Angeles, Project ETHOS is presenting the collections of ten designers, including two from the hit reality television competition “Project Runway” - season six contestant Gordana Gehlhausen (GOGA by Gordana) and season seven contestant Jesus Estrada (Haus of Estrada). Other designers and lines include: Rochelle Corino (Rumplemunkeh), Maria Peralta (Devious Damzels), Rachael Feigelson (Love Child), Michelle Liu (EMEL), Shant Der Ashodian (ARKA Clothing), Omatu Gottschlich (Fulani), Marialia Pacitto (Marialia), and Seth Nobmann (Seth Wellington).

Art by Amy Bernays (paint), Lea Barozzi (graphic design and illustration), Michael Pukec (live painter), Jennifer Gutierrez Morgan (photography and mixed media installations), Claire Cetera (paint and photography), Arnold Randall (sketch, paint and mixed media), and more will inhabit every corner of The Music Box, while music by local DJs and live music acts will be heard throughout the evening.

The event’s charitable partner is Love Cures Cancer www.lovecurescancer.com, an organization dedicated to benefiting children with cancer while raising awareness and working to find a cure.

Event Description
Who says print is dead? Learn how interactive media and print are coming together to create new, cutting-edge integrated marketing campaigns.

Philip Warbasse of Warbasse Design demonstrates how 2-dimensional barcodes, commonly referred to as QR Codes, are being used to tie the “real” world (printed pieces from newspaper ads to napkins) to the “virtual” world (the Internet, a text message, a song, a video, etc.). The possibilities are endless and Philip will lead with examples of work in the entertainment and retail industries. He will also give some valuable tips for creating and managing your own 2D barcode integrated campaigns, from business cards to outdoor signage.

After this meeting, you’ll see print as a “facilitator” in integrated marketing campaigns. You’ll also be up-to-speed on the latest in 2D barcode and mobile marketing. So don’t be surprised if, by the end of the meeting, you have a few clever ideas of your own for future interactive print campaigns.

Invite your creative, interactive, marketing and account services co-workers; after all, it’s an integrated world that we now live in! Don’t miss out, as this will be our last program meeting for the season.

At this meeting, experience live examples of QR Codes (like this one) with your smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Palm, etc.). Before the meeting, download a QR reader for your phone. Text warbassedesign apala to 368266 to receive a text message with download links.

“Zeitgeist Day”, or ZDAY for short, is an annual, global event to increase public awareness of The Zeitgeist Movement and The Venus Project. The basic pursuit of The Movement is to begin a transition into a new, sustainable social design called a “Resource-Based Economy”.

Imagine a world with no money, no war, no hunger, no crime, sustainable energy, respect for the environment, limited government, the elimination of mundane jobs, more free time for creative pursuits and an abundance of healthy and safe food, quality housing and utilization of the most innovative/efficient technology available.

Imagine using the scientific method and objective data to arrive at important decisions for society, rather than allowing bought-off politicians with limited knowledge to continue making decisions that are not in the interest of mankind. Sounds Utopian, but the plans and resources are available TODAY to begin transitioning into a more caring, compassionate, communal, efficient, respectful world with the potential for much richer and happier lives.

Come to ZDAY to learn more, meet local members, get free info and DVDs, partake in a Q&A session and enjoy the music, creativity and positive vibrations from members of The Luminaries and Mass Ensemble.

12PM - 6PM: Information Expo
3PM - 6PM: Live Video Broadcast from NY Event
7PM: Q&A Session
8PM: J Brave, Freewill, & Amore One of Luminaries
