Event Description
FREEDOM ON THE FENCE looks at the history of Polish posters and their role in the political and cultural life of Poland. Covering the period from WWII through the fall of Communism, it captures the paradox of how this unique graphic art form flourished within a Communist regime. This fascinating documentary features interviews with older and younger generations of poster artists, including artists from the Laband's exhibition "Escapes," as well as commentaries from both American and Polish scholars and artists on the significance of the Polish poster as a cultural icon.

Andrea Marks will speak about Polish posters in the context of the history of design and about her experience making the film.

The film will be screened in LMU's Murphy Recital Hall, followed by a tour of "Escapes: Polish Art in the Communist Era" in the Laband Art Gallery, with curator Carolyn Peter.
