Event Sold Out!

TIME: Refreshments and mingling begin at 6:30; presentation starts at 7 p.m. sharp!

With: Petrula Vrontikis, Vrontikis Design Office, and Kate Rivinus, Baker | Brand Communications

Moderator: Cathy Curtis, AIGA Shop Talk executive producer

You've been working as a designer/senior designer for years, and now you're wondering what comes next. Maybe you should aim for a position as creative director. But what's involved in managing a team and handling client relations? What are the tradeoffs and challenges? How much of a "people person" do you really need to be? This Shop Talk offers two distinctive perspectives.

As creative director of her own firm (and a senior faculty member at Art Center), AIGA Fellow Petrula Vrontikis has been a leading voice in graphic design for more than 20 years. Her clients include Nokia, Mattel, USC, E! Entertainment Television and the Motion Picture & Television Fund.

Kate Rivinus, formerly a designer at KBDA, has been at Baker--a brand consultancy and design firm with clients ranging from Fortune 1000 to Fortune 100 companies--since 2002. After working for several years as a senior designer and design director, she was recently promoted to creative director.

Admission: Free for the first 15 AIGA members who sign up; other members and all non-members pay $40. For reservations, please call 818.558.3968. The venue address and parking information will be e-mailed to reservation holders a few days before the event.

What Is Shop Talk?
The Shop Talk series, intended for mid-career designers, presents individuals with demonstrated expertise in areas that inform our creative output, our careers and businesses, and our outlook on the world. Limited to about 30 people, these small gatherings encourage audience participation.

Is there a way to get more information on the teams each of the presenters is leading before I sign up? It's hard to tell from their websites.

I don't quite understand your question, Janeen. What kind of information are you looking for?

What kind of information are you looking for?

What size teams do they lead? Are they in charge of big groups or small teams?

My idea in planning this Shop Talk was to contrast the working methods of creative directors at firms of different sizes. Petrula leads a small team; Kate leads a large team. (I don't know the precise numbers, but you are welcome to ask if you join us . . . and I hope you do.)

Cathy - I think Janeen's point is that the description of this event doesn't give a good sense of the presenter's relevance to the topic. Maybe next time the event's description can be more descriptive.

is this event really sold out!
can you fit one more?

Yep, it is really sold out. (We have very limited seating space.)
But if you are an AIGA member, you can call the AIGA office (818.558.3968) and be put on the waiting list, in case of a last-minute cancellation by another member.

Please consider signing up for the final Shop Talk of 2008: The Glitch-Free Pitch Meeting (In-House). More information is available on the AIGA website.
