We’ve been out of touch with our human side lately. With endless hours bound to the computer, tethered to the cell phone and stuck to the TV, it’s no wonder we need take some time for ourselves, help each other out and connect with the community.

Your friendly, neighborhood AIGA/LA is hosting Craftivism, the one-day marketplace event to help you get back in touch. Craftivism was born out of the philosophy that designers can make a difference, by hand.

Come to shop, mingle and network with fellow humans in the ideal creative environment. Ticket proceeds will benefit the AIGA Scholarship Fund which creates educational opportunities in the LA area to support the next generation of designers. Join us in making a difference, one hand at a time. Don’t worry, your computer will be there when you get back.

Interested in being a vendor?
Download this PDF application to sign up to sell your wares and be a part of Craftivist history. Booths are just $35 for members and $50 for non-members.
Deadline for vendor applications is Friday, August 3, 2007.

Intellectually I know this isn't true, but sometimes it feels like I am one of very few people in this country who take time to work on "hands on" art. It feels REALLY good to have paint and glue under my fingernails again, and I love ignoring the computer behind the curtain!

Hi Lyn - I hope you'll be signing up then as an exhibitor at the event. We'd love to have you!

I'm surprised to hear that, Lyn. There's a robust DIY community that's developed in the country over the last few years, spurred in part by publications like Craft and Make. in addition to this event, you should be sure to check out both

Felt Club

and...

Etsy

I think you'll be surprised how many comrades in arms you'll discover.

I’m a confessed closet artist who likes (needs / loves) to make things. Only to raise funds for AIGA scholarships will I dare to come out of the closet and disclose my obsessions.

I don't understand this event. How is this AIGA?

I have not been working with paint or glue lately, but I love the idea of having it under my fingernails! I am thinking that I will need to incorporate that into my weekend. :)

Anon: It builds community. It raises funds for the scholarship. It complements other more serious, profession-focused events. Even the American Bar Association has their traditional B&B (Beisball & BBQ). Hope you can come and experience downtown on a Sunday afternoon, a remider that we live in a city.

I suspect everyone will be amazed at what we create when we are our own clients. I love the idea; I would be there, except I'm working that day!

This message is for Nida. I'm part of Los de Abajo Printmaking Collective. I sent our application form and would like to know if there's still space at the designer's marketplace. We're very interested in participating at this event and meeting other artists and designers.

Thanks!

We are going to be a vendor at this event, it's true. Only our full name is eEvil Ink Design (not just Eevil as it says above).

We sell "Break-Up" greeting cards, "Hook-Up" cards, UnHoliday cards and a variety of T-Shirted designs- all of which will be at the fair.

Check out our site: www.eevil.org

Thanks!

What a relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Should be fun times. See everyone there.

This sounds like so much fun! Cant wait to check it out! Wish I had known earlier! I would have love to have applied!

Glad to see the AIGA getting in on the action of "making" with your hands...wish I could make the event. Wanted to let you all know that we (the American Craft Council) are relaunching American Craft magazine this fall and I think you all will be really interested in everything we've got planned. Keep an eye out for the new mag come September 19th. It going to be good!

Oh yeah, hope you all will let me know how the event went! Drop me a line at awagner@craftcouncil.org. Thanks, good luck, and have fun!

Just wanted to say what a great event yesterday. And the response was great as well as great people and atmosphere. Much success with the santee project.

It was definitely a great event! Santee is great - I can't wait for the dog park!

I'm just stoked about the Nine-ja shirt I got there.

We have great photos from the event, taken by the ever talented Sara J. Flemming! Thanks, Sara...
