TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2007 | 6:30 TO 9PM

Michelle Katz covers the basics of IP law: how to protect, license and sell your work and how NOT to get sued when you use other people's work, locations or likenesses. The presentation also covers the basic deal structure and contract terms you need to know for your business (and for scrabble games and cocktail parties). In a world made increasingly complex because of both technology and entrepreneurialism, designers need to understand what their intellectual property rights are, and how to maintain them.

Where is this event exactly?

This event is at a design studio in Westlake Village. Our policy for Shop Talks is to send location information with confirmation of registration. We do this because Shop Talks are limited in size and administration and we cannot accommodate drop-ins. Hope to see you there R Snyder! Any questions, let us know.

Is there a plan in the works to provide live webcasts of future ShopTalk events? Apologies in advance if this was the wrong place to post this...

Nope, no plans for live webcasts. We just don't have the bandwidth nor resources to pull this off. Jean, contact us and let us know if this is something you can help with.

This was a great Shop Talk, guys, congrats! The speaker, Michelle Katz was terrific; informative, funny, and knowledgeable. Delving into areas of law designers may fear to tread, she toned down the legalese and turned up the optimism. The big idea: copyright is a really good thing and totally attainable! I haven't taken notes like that since high-school biology class. Thanks, Michelle!

Shop Talk team: it would be great if we could continue the conversation and get to some of the topics we had to rush through in a future session.

Thanks Michelle for a very insightful talk. Would love to have more of these kind of Shop Talk. It was quite a hike from where I worked, but it was worth every penny. Thanks again.

Michelle was fabulous, though I did have nightmares all that night of copyright lawyers chasing me! Not that I've ever violated anyone's copyright...or at least now I never will because I know what is and isn't fair use. I'd love it if Michelle did a follow up on Stock Photography; it's an area that seems many shades of gray. Thanks!

This was a fantastic event! Michelle demystified the world of copyright law and presented potentially dull material in a highly palatable way. I loved how she started by debunking copyright myths and then gave us tangible solutions on how to handle copyright pitfalls. I also liked how Michelle welcomed questions (with prizes!) throughout her presentation. The topic was timely and the event was well worth the drive. Thank you Shop Talk organizers!
