CiscoHome La Brea

Thursday, April 19, 2007 | 7 to 10pm | CiscoHome La Brea

With the national spotlight on climate change, we’ve all probably felt fearful about the world’s environmental future at one point over the past few months. We also may find ourselves feeling helpless, not knowing what, as individuals, we can do to help the situation. However, as designers, it turns out there are many ways we are able to make a positive impact.

Decisions in package and product design, brand strategy and consumerism, as well as our lifestyle away from work, all impact the economic and environmental well-being of our city and planet. Celebrate Earth Day with the companies and experts who are reinventing the way products and designs are created, packaged and recycled.

CO[LA]BORATE: SEEing Green will introduce designers and other creatives to products and tools that are Sustainable, Environmental and Ecological. Field experts will give short presentations on environmentally-friendly practices, and be available for small group sessions on the following topics:

  • Sustainable materials, products and ideas

  • Environmentally-friendly printing with recycled papers and soy-based inks

  • Energy efficient computers and printers

  • Reducing waste and pollution within the design studio

  • Sustainable and environmentally-friendly design practices

  • Local businesses that employ green ideas and processes

Sign-ups for these small group sessions will be available upon arrival at the event. They will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so come early to guarantee your spot.

Confirmed Speakers:

Phil Hamlett, AIGA Center for Sustainable Design
Joy Evans, Mohawk
Cisco Pinedo, CiscoHome

This event is free of charge for everyone (members and non-members), but you must register online or by phone at 818.558.3968 to attend.

About the Speakers

Trained as a graphic designer, Phil Hamlett has over twenty years of experience in a wide variety of design and communications roles working for studios and clients large and small on both coasts. He serves as co-chair of the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design and helped to organize the 2006 conference Compostmodern. Currently, he is ensconced as a design educator (hence the use of words like “ensconced?) as Graduate Director of the School of Graphic Design, Academy of Art University in San Francisco which keeps him pretty busy. The occasional writing assignment and an ongoing interest in sustainable business practice round out his time.

Joy Evans has been with Mohawk for four years working as a District Sales Manager in Southern California and Arizona and as the Corporate Business Development Manager. Recently promoted to Regional Manager, she now works with eight reps in the Western Region. As part of her role as Corporate Business Development Manager, Joy worked closely with businesses to teach them about how paper, and Mohawk, can be used to help promote an environmentally-friendly message.

Cisco Pinedo and his wife Alba started making custom upholstery in the garage of their home in 1985. In a highly competitive, design-driven industry, Cisco Brothers quickly distinguished itself with its superior craftsmanship, cutting-edge style, and unparalleled value. In February 2003, Cisco Brothers opened the LA Design Center in South Los Angeles – an +80,000 square foot design community housing several furniture showrooms and an art gallery. Cisco Home, in the center of Los Angeles high-end furniture district, also houses Inside Green, a collection of 100% organically constructed, naturally upholstered fine furniture using strictly FSC Certified hardwoods, fully complying with the international guidelines of the Forest Stewardship Council. (CoC-2039).

This is a beautiful thing. I'm so glad this community is digging into the greener ways we can live.

If anyone is going to be in Kansas City, or is perhaps reading the LA site from elsewhere, please note that the KC chapter of the AIGA is holding a sister 'Green Salon' event, called Five Great Ideas, with Jerry Allan from MCAD. Also not the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design (CSD) has added to their Tools a section on how to host a Green Salon, so have it!

any chance the capacity might be increased? ;-) or perhaps a second night added? such an important topic and i know many more would love to go!

We are very sorry we reached the 175 person capacity of the space so quickly. Regretfully, we can't add more people. We will definitely be looking at doing a similar type of event again. We will post any important resources to this event page within a week after the event. So stay tuned for that...

AIGA event photos are posted on flickr - join the group and add your own!

Here's a PDF link to the great posters by Kristin Keller that were displayed at the event.
