William McDonough is an internationally renowned designer and one of the primary proponents and shapers of what he and his partners call "The Next Industrial Revolution." McDonough is known for his profound approach to design and commerce incorporating concern for economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental intelligence. His ideas and efforts were honored when, in 1996, he received the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development, the nation's highest environmental honor.

In 2003, he was recognized as a member of the EcoWorx development team for which Shaw Industries received the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award. McDonough is the founding principal of William McDonough + Partners, Architecture and Community Design, an internationally recognized design firm practicing ecologically, socially, economically intelligent architecture and planning in the U.S. and abroad.

Along with German chemist Michael Braungart, McDonough cofounded and serves as principal of MBDC, a product and process design firm assisting client companies to design profitable and ecologically intelligent products and systems. Together, they coauthored Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, considered a handbook for 21st century innovation. Since 1986, the Toyota Lecture Series has enriched the educational environment of Art Center students and the community at large. Eminent speakers have addressed international movements in art and design as well as the cultural, historical, and political currents that shape the creative process.
